Self-Evaluation of Framework

Education is constantly changing and improving.  Topics and tools I learned during college are already outdated or not applicable anymore.  As a result, it is important for educators to constantly be evaluating their teaching methods in order to effectively teach our students.






Summary of Triple E Framework:

The Triple E Framework was developed by Liz Kolb in order to ensure research on education technologies was being properly implemented into the classroom.  The three levels of this framework include engagement in learning goals, enhancement of learning goals, and extension of learning goals.  As Liz Kolb discusses in her article, Is technology a gimmick in your classroom?, the framework should be used in order to know what the integration of technology should look like, sound like, and feel like.  The Triple E Framework focuses on these three aspects to teaching in order to ensure technology is being used effectively and producing increased student outcomes.  I'm guilty of using technology and thinking that since it is different from the traditional white board lecture, it must be engaging and effective.  This framework was designed in order for teachers to recognize that technology is not just a tool, but needs to be incorporated with much thought and reflection in order to be truly successful.

1) Engagement in the Learning

This aspect for the framework has teachers ask themselves if time on task, student motivation, and social learning has increased due to the integration of technology.  Engagement needs to focus on the content and not the features of the technology tool.

At the high school I work at, we have very limited technology available in the classroom.  I have a projector in my room and there are 3 computer carts that we share between all teachers.  After learning about HyperDocs from the trends in educational technology assignment, I decided to create a math lesson where students explored a geometry topic through various videos and activities.  Before this lesson I realized my integration of technology was not fully engaging the students.  I reserved our school's computer cart and noticed how much of an affect using technology in a different manner had on my students' learning.  I rated myself on this lesson using the Triple E Framework for engagement for learning below.  I believe my students were very motivated to start the learning process, but time on task and social learning can to be increased as I continue to integrate technology in this manner.

2) Enhancement of the Learning Goals
The second level of the framework emphasizes the "value-added" aspect of the technology.  The tool should be used to aid, assist, and scaffold learning.  Through differentiation, learning can become more personalized and relatable to the learner.  As discussed on the Triple E Framework website, the traditional drill and practice method to teaching does not produce positive achievements for learning outcomes.

When completing the self-evaluation for this level, I believe I was able to create many scaffolds and opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning that they would not have been able to without the use of the HyperDocs.  I was able to incorporate student choice into the document and allow students to learn in a method that was most suitable to their learning style. I believe that I can still work on incorporating high-order thinking skills into my lesson.

3) Extending the Learning Goals

The last level of the framework focuses on providing opportunities for students to extend their knowledge by making connections to other aspects of their life.  In addition, a focus is placed on gaining non-content related skills called "soft skills" as well.

During the self-evaluation for extending the learning goals, I realized I was able to incorporate soft skills that related to students' everyday life.  I took a geometry topic and had students explore future careers that required the use of specific math skills.  Although I was able to include opportunities for students to learn and make connections about geometry outside of their typical school and everyday life experiences, I believe I can explore these concepts more through collaborative opportunities available through technology.

After evaluating myself on my most recent math lesson that involved technology through HyperDocs, I scored 13/18 which demonstrates a strong connection.   I believe that my score can change both positively or negatively based on how I decide to incorporate technology.  I hope to continue to learn about effective technology tools in this class and through colleagues in order to maintain a strong connection and eventually have the capabilities to create an exceptional connection with technology integration.

  2. I agree with you, things are always changing and we need to keep evaluating how we think. Every professional must think this way. I liked that you actually took the time to change the way you taught in class and incorporated the Triple E framework and the Hyperdocs. Technology is always advancing and it is to the benefit of learning!
